Getting Started

I've enjoyed baking for as long I can remember. There's a picture of 2 year old me standing on a chair at the kitchen counter, holding the beater to my mom's Kitchen Aid mixer. I was by my mom's side making cookies until I was old enough to make them myself. And I've been dreaming of opening a bakery since then. But dreaming about something and making it happen are two totally different things. The dreaming part is easy. It all works out, you make money and everything is perfect. It's the making the dream a reality that is the hard part! 

The last few years of my life, I've read this quote by Theodore Roosevelt many times:

"It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat."

This quote motivated me to drive an auto rickshaw 1500 miles in India in January 2014, then to volunteer in Malawi for 3 months last year. It helped me make friends and go out on dates. It's the quote that motivated me to switch nursing jobs, get a business license and start Whisk and Bake. Making the decision to get beyond the dreaming of having a bakery to actually owning one was (and will be for a while) a huge step in "daring greatly".
